Tommy Fairchild Trail

Tommy Fairchild Trail

While I’m in Pennsylvania for the next two months, I thought I’d try as many walking trails as I could as I wind through the Keystone state. Trail number six is the Tommy Fairchild Trail. I was going to name the trail the Susquehanna shuffle until I found a sign with the name.

After presenting a pipeline program the previous night in neighboring Wysox, I spent the night in Towanda. Lying beside the North Bank of the Susquehanna River, Towanda is a beautiful little town. Of course it’s old, as much of its structures demonstrate, but it’s also alive with activity. I drove through town the night before to reach my hotel, and the downtown was full of people and businesses. I’ve grown used to business districts of small towns being full of vacant buildings and thrift shops. This downtown was rocking and vibrant.

The trail stretches from the north part of town to the south, with much of the trail skirting the river. The only negative I could site for the trail is that the road beside the trail seems to be a kind of truck route, so it was a little noisy. Otherwise, it was entirely enjoyable and relaxing. Onward to trail seven.
