The Incline
While on vacation in Colorado last year, I decided to pay a visit to a landmark that I had heard a lot about, but had never visited, The Incline. For those who don't know, the Incline is located in Manitou Springs, on the site of a now defunct cog train line. The line ran straight up Mt. Manitou. The kicker is, the trail gains over 2000' of altitude in less than one mile. The grade, in some places, reaches 65%. Good times!
Another fun thing about the Incline, is what's known as the "false summit". The "top" that you can see, and are working to reach the whole way up, is not really the top. Once you reach it, you still have around 300 more stairs to go.
There is a quite interesting story surrounding the Incline and the efforts of enthusiasts to improve and protect the trail. In 2014, the trail was closed for a few months and completely refurbished. I did survive my first attempt, and lived to tell the tale. And, actually enjoyed it. I think the secret is to take your time, and, take plenty of water. It is definitely a challenge, but when you finish, you're left with a great sense of accomplishment, and sore legs. Click here for more information
